Is Saint Patrick Italian or Irish?

On St. Patrick’s Day, Pasta Fagioli may need to appear on the holiday specials menu, on top, just above those corned beef sandwiches!  No one knows specifically where he was born, but historians believe he was born in Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton in Scotland (technically a territory of Britain at the time).  Patrick’s parents were Calpurnius and Conchessa, who were Italians living on a British estate.  So technically – he’s Italian!

When Patrick entered the priesthood and eventually became a bishop, after many years of doing work in Rome, he was sent to Ireland to spread the message of the Gospel because he was able to speak Celtic, and communicate with the Irish.  Patrick preached all over Ireland, using a shamrock to explain the Trinity and converting thousands with his quiet, unassuming manner and gentle way of speaking.  By the time he died in 461, Patrick had converted virtually all of Ireland to Christianity.

When I went to a catholic grammar school in Chicago I was taught by Nuns that St.Patrick was the son of a Roman Administrator in England. He was kidnapped by pirates who eventually sold him to an Irish Clan in Ireland who then named him Patrick. The Catholic Church declared Patrick a Saint after he was a priest that spread Christianity thru Ireland until he died.
